Client Spotlight: Criterium Engineers Partners in City’s Biggest Development Since the “Great Fire of 1866”

Across the country, Criterium Engineers’ national network of 35 offices partners with visionaries who are transforming landscapes and bringing new life to downtown buildings. These projects are located far from our corporate headquarters in Maine, however we are part of an exciting development is happening right in our own backyard with Portland Foreside.

The development was first announced in fall of 2016, but Portland’s Planning Board recently approved the phase 1 site plan for this major waterfront development project which will transform the 10-acre waterfront site at 58 Fore Street, on the east end of the city. These historic buildings and property will become a mixed-use development with local and national retail outlets, residential rental units, a hotel, and office space. Also a part of the Portland Foreside plan are a 13-acre marina, public market, event spaces and pedestrian trails. Sun Life U.S. announced in September that its Portland headquarters will be moved to this site as well.

As part of Criterium Engineers work on this project, we performed Environmental Site Assessments, Property Condition Assessments and we are currently performing construction engineering services.

MaineBiz, a local business publication, reported last fall that Jeff Levine, Portland’s former director of planning and urban development noted, “This is the most development the city has seen since the Great Fire of 1866.” He added, “When there’s this amount of development, people get concerned, but it also allows us to become the city we want to be for the next hundred years.”

Criterium Engineers and its employees are thrilled to be a part of our state’s biggest development—one that our families, friends, neighbors and visitors to Vacationland will enjoy for generations to come.
