Senior Structural Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY:

Senior Structural Engineers are responsible to lead consulting engineering and technical projects for Criterium Engineers’ clients across the U.S. Work involves a full range of building-related consulting, forensic, and inspection services for projects in building construction, technology and efficiency, real estate risk management, due diligence, and other building engineering projects. A Senior Structural engineer works in collaboration with other engineering team members and our Client Success group.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform field inspections on the full spectrum of buildings, including old and new construction, residential and commercial structures, and high and low-rise buildings.
  • Write, review, and assess inspection reports for clients, ensuring clients receive clear, timely and high-quality reports for assigned projects including field inspections, technical writing, and structural calculations.
  • Design repairs for structural deficiencies in buildings.
  • Review construction documents to evaluate a project’s constructability from a structural engineering, materials and other relevant perspectives (e.g. Constructability Reviews).
  • Develop project objectives by reviewing project proposals and plans and conferring with Chief Engineer and/or Client Success Team.
  • Serve as day-to-day point of contact for key clients in collaboration with Project Management.
  • Manage task completion in accordance with expected deliverables and consulting budget.
  • Provide technical consulting services as defined by project scope.
  • Provide clear and responsive feedback to clients about their projects.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and complete communications with Client Success staff and Chief Engineer, ensuring project needs and deadlines are being met.
  • Actively participate in project meetings and weekly team meetings.
  • As needed, advise, coach, and develop other engineers within the organization, including corporate and affiliate office staff.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Chief Engineer.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 7+ years of direct experience as a Structural Engineer in a related field, building construction preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years of demonstrated leadership in a consulting engineering market with responsibility for highly technical or complex projects.
  • Licensed, Professional Engineer preferred.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in building construction activities, including a practical knowledge of construction means, methods, and materials.
  • Comfort performing and reviewing structural calculations for buildings and projects.
  • Passion for building science with a demonstrated ability to apply advances in technology and building techniques to building and client needs.
  • Experienced at conveying objective, unbiased perspectives even if the information requires clients to make improvements to plans and work quality.
  • OSHA 10 certification or equivalent required.
  • Strong building code knowledge – certifications preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read and interpret a wide variety of blueprints and schematics on new or existing structures.
  • Ability to evaluate contractors’ work in order to detect problems with a design.
  • Critical thinking mindset effective at problem solving.
  • The ability to work with, maintain, and develop contacts within the building design/construction industry (builders, manufacturers, architects/engineers, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport, confidence and trust with client as well as company associates.

  • Strong organization and documentation skills, including proficiency in technical writing standards.
  • Highly organized, adaptable and flexible to balance the needs of multiple, concurrent projects.

  • Experienced and demonstrated interactive skills related to serving clients are critical, including strong communication skills and an ability to manage relationships.
  • Capable of managing both internal schedules and customer requirements, anticipate potential issues, and mitigate risk accordingly.
  • Ability for travel requiring a reliable form of transportation.
  • Comfortable with and capable of utilizing a variety of computer interfaces and software including MS Office, Unanet’s InFocus, and Criterium’s proprietary software for inspection and report writing.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US.

SALARY RANGE: $80,000 – $100,000+

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Out-of-state travel required approximately 10%-15%.
  • Access to reliable local transportation and the ability to perform inspections requiring traveling away from home/office.
  • Flexibility to work from a home office when not performing field inspections.
  • Requires some strenuous physical exertion as climbing ladders, crawling or crouching in restricted areas.  Occasionally lifting objects over 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to sit (60%), stand (40%), reach, bend, and move about our facility or work sites.

Client Success Manager (CSM)

POSITION SUMMARY

Client Success Managers [CSMs] draw on their own customer experiences to build long-term client relationships intent on delivering successful client outcomes. Acting as a thought partner and knowledge resource, the Client Success Manager develops, supports, strengthens, and grows our client connections by following up frequently with clients to solicit feedback and facilitate achievement of their business objectives utilizing Criterium’s services. From client onboarding to client goal achievement, the CSM functions as an internal advocate for the client, ensuring that projects meet Criterium’s quality standards and fulfill the project scope while avoiding scope creep. This is accomplished through effective and efficient communication and cross-functional collaboration with Criterium’s network of Professional Engineers and Technical Specialists. As a member of the Project Team, the CSM monitors project progress, coordinates adjustments to resource allocation and facilitates information sharing to deliver final results that meet the needs of clients. Communication skills are critical to the success of this position as there is extensive interaction with national and local clients and colleagues at all levels of the business.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Deliver value for clients
    • Maintain ongoing engagement with clients to sustain and develop client relationships for current and future projects.
    • Construct and execute effective customer onboarding procedures for new clients that build trust, clearly define client objectives and provide appropriate client education.
    • Develop and sustain a strong rapport with assigned clients by making periodic visits as appropriate, exploring specific needs, anticipating new opportunities and providing clear and responsive communication about their projects.
    • Field requests for proposals from new and existing clients
    • Monitor project status utilizing progress to date and estimation to completion [Earned Value Management] metrics, continually assessing project risk and promptly addressing any divergence from the project plan.
    • As needed, represent Criterium Engineers at events such as trade shows and industry conferences
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to drive client success
    • Assemble and conduct Project Launch meeting with Project Team, triggering collaborative Project Ownership.
    • Project initiation – ensure projects are set up in Criterium’s project management system which includes partnering with Engineering and Field Operations teams to budget a project’s scope and resource requirements in setting up the project plan, preparing and reviewing executed agreements and clarifying interpretation of conditions, and securing external resources, such as subcontractor agreements or documentation requirements.
    • Collaborate with technical staff to monitor workloads and collaborate with Head of Client Success to level resources as needed to meet deliverable expectations.
    • Maintain active engagement with the Project Team throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Conduct monthly analysis of all project work to ensure billable time is captured properly and accurately in collaboration with Accounting / Finance group for monthly invoicing.
  • Client Success Operations
    • Develop proposals, including establishment of project scope, fees and budget estimates, for specified key clients.
    • Initiate and monitor project-specific change orders and work orders.
    • Administer project close-out process by monitoring final payment status, reviewing project performance and engaging Lessons Learned procedures as appropriate.
    • Engage, utilize and maintain records with appropriate technology to facilitate efficient and accurate knowledge sharing and workflows.
    • As needed, engage in client prospecting and monitor incoming new client inquiry systems, directing those inquiries to the appropriate CSM or Head of Client Success
    • Advise Head of Client Success on needed documentation updates, including proposal templates, report formatting, standard terms and other standardized documents
    • Maintain document retention archives, client contacts and distribution lists, and log transmittal of document deliveries to clients.
  • Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in a technical or business-related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in and managing projects in a services environment with a track record of successful deliverables and outcomes; CAPM / PMP certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of building science and/or real estate development is a plus.
  • Sales and/or client support experience in a service or consulting business market is a plus.
  • Strong business acumen.
